Industrial Applications of Isobornyl Acrylate (IBOA, CAS 5888-33-5)

Isobornyl Acrylate (IBOA) is a low-viscosity mono-functional acrylate monomer with a rigid bicyclic isobornyl group. It is widely used as a reactive diluent in radiation-curable systems and as a co-monomer in acrylic resin synthesis; categories of use that have been established in the polymer and coatings industry for several decades.
• UV- and EB-Curable Coatings & Adhesives
Used as a reactive diluent to reduce formulation viscosity in radiation-curable coating and adhesive systems. The rigid isobornyl group contributes to the hardness and weatherability profile of cured films.
End Products: Industrial protective coatings, wood and furniture finishes, pressure-sensitive adhesives, electronic potting and conformal coatings.
• Graphic Arts & Printing Inks
Functions as a reactive diluent in UV-curable ink formulations, where its low viscosity supports film formation during the photopolymerization step.
End Products: Packaging inks, label printing inks, screen printing inks.
• Acrylic, Polyester & Polyurethane Resins
Used as a co-monomer in the synthesis of acrylic, polyester, and polyurethane resin systems and oligomers. The bicyclic structure contributes a high glass-transition temperature (Tg) component to the polymer backbone.
End Products: Acrylic copolymers, reactive oligomers, prepolymers for downstream resin formulators.
