Solvent Blue 36 (C.I. 61551, also known as 1,4-bis(isopropylamino)anthraquinone or Disperse Blue 134; CAS 14233-37-5) is a solid, oil-soluble anthraquinone-class blue colorant with a molecular weight of 322.40 g/mol and a melting range of 167–171 °C. Its solubility in alcohol, acetone, ester, and hydrocarbon vehicles, combined with thermal stability in polymer matrices up to approximately 250 °C and a cleaner regulatory profile than several legacy blue anthraquinones, has supported its use across industrial coloration programs for several decades. Typical application areas are summarized below.

• Engineering & Transparent Plastics Coloration

Solvent Blue 36 is widely used to color transparent and translucent engineering thermoplastics. Its high solubility in the molten polymer phase and thermal stability up to approximately 250 °C support uniform tinting in extrusion, injection-moulding, and sheet-casting workflows that have been established in industrial color chemistry for several decades. Polymer–dye compatibility, dispersion behavior, and end-product qualification are the buyer's responsibility.

End Products: polycarbonate (PC) sheet and housings, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) extrusions, polystyrene (PS) injection-moulded parts, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) components, transparent rigid PVC profiles.

• Polyester & Synthetic Fiber Coloration

Under its Disperse Blue 134 identity, Solvent Blue 36 is used in mass coloration of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polyester-based synthetic fibers. The compound disperses readily in the polymer melt and produces a clean blue shade with good light and wash fastness in mass-pigmented (dope-dyed) yarn. Selection, addition level, and end-product qualification are the buyer's responsibility.

End Products: mass-pigmented PET fiber, polyester staple yarn, polyester film, PET bottle-grade resin (selected applications), polyester monofilament.

• Solvent-Based Coatings, Printing Inks & Tinting Concentrates

Anthraquinone solvent dyes are used in solvent-based coating, gravure and flexographic printing-ink, and tinting-concentrate formulations where high transparency and water insolubility are required. Solvent Blue 36 dissolves readily in alcohol, ketone, ester, and aromatic hydrocarbon vehicles, giving a clean blue shade suitable for clear lacquers, transparent overprints, and pre-dispersed tinting concentrates. Compatibility with binder system, additive package, and substrate must be qualified by the formulator.

End Products: solvent-based industrial coatings, gravure and flexographic printing inks, transparent lacquer finishes, solid colorant masterbatches, liquid tinting concentrates.

• Industrial Wax, Candle & Lubricant Coloration

Solvent Blue 36 is soluble in molten paraffin and stearic-acid wax systems and in aliphatic petroleum lubricants, allowing uniform blue tinting at low addition levels. The dye class has been used in industrial wax, candle, and lubricant coloration for several decades. Material is supplied with a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet; suitability for any specific finished formulation, including any food-contact, toy, or consumer-article end use — is the responsibility of the end formulator and must be qualified under the buyer's own regulatory framework.
